CHANDIGARH: When Aman Gupta married Aradhana eight years ago, she was in the midst of a gritty battle, taking on the man who molested her friend Ruchika that led to her suicide. His apprehensions were understandable. But, the birth of their daughter changed all that: Aman jumped headlong into the fight that made the nation sit up and take note.
"When my marriage with Aradhana was being discussed, I knew they were fighting a powerful person.
I was apprehensive. Though I supported my wife all along, the fear of SPS Rathore always loomed large," said Aman. But daughter Aashriya's birth in 2005 changed everything. "When I held her in my arms, the first thought that flashed through my mind was: What all must have Ruchika's father gone through. I could empathize with him and correlate with my wife's determination to fight on," said the IT professional, who lives in Australia with Aradhana and their two kids. Soon, from mere moral support, Aman joined the crusade his wife and in-laws were waging since 1990. While Aman's support came as a big morale booster for Aradhana, she had already become a seasoned fighter.
"My freedom was snatched and my life turned into a nightmare — all this just for standing up against a wrong meted out to my friend. But the more they threatened me, the more I became determined to fight for Ruchika," said Aradhana, then 13.
